Breaking Barriers, Building Business: A New Chapter for Entrepreneurship in Calderdale

At the Elsie Whiteley Innovation Centre, we are proud to be the home of #BreakingBarriersBuildingBusiness — a community-led business support programme created to empower underrepresented entrepreneurs in Halifax and across Calderdale.

As a social enterprise owned by Halifax Opportunities Trust, enterprise sits at the heart of everything we do. Our mission is rooted in creating opportunity, and helping people realise their potential through enterprise. This year, we strengthened that commitment by placing a clear focus on practical, people-centred entrepreneurship programmes that respond directly to local need.

Breaking Barriers is the first initiative of its kind in Calderdale — and it was built differently from the start.

Designed With Businesses, Not Just For Them

With sponsorship from the British Business Bank, our Enterprise Engagement Officer Rebekha Smith and Alex Beardsley FCIM co-created the programme in collaboration with a diverse range of local Halifax businesses.

Rather than assuming what entrepreneurs might need, we asked them.

Business owners told us they wanted:

  • Clear, jargon-free guidance on specific areas of business

  • Practical, immediately applicable skills

  • Stronger local networks

  • A safe and supportive space to connect

Breaking Barriers was designed as a direct response to that feedback.

Four Weeks of Practical Growth

Over four focused and impactful weeks, participants took part in four core sessions designed to strengthen both the practical and personal foundations of their businesses.

Business Strategy and Planning

The programme began with clarity. In this session, participants stepped back from day-to-day pressures to focus on the bigger picture of their business.

They explored:

  • Vision, mission, and long-term direction

  • Setting realistic and measurable goals

  • Identifying target markets and competitive positioning

  • Creating structured, actionable business plans

For many, this was the first time they had formally mapped out their strategy. The session helped turn ideas into structured plans — replacing uncertainty with direction.

Confidence and Mindset

Entrepreneurship is as much personal as it is practical. This session focused on building resilience, confidence, and self-belief.

Participants discussed:

  • Overcoming imposter syndrome

  • Managing fear and uncertainty

  • Decision-making under pressure

  • Developing a growth mindset

By normalising shared challenges and encouraging honest conversation, the session created a safe environment where business owners could recognise that they were not alone. Confidence began to grow not just from knowledge — but from connection.

Access to Finance

The Access to Finance session demystified funding and strengthened financial capability — two areas that many entrepreneurs find intimidating.

Participants explored different funding routes and learned what lenders and investors look for when assessing applications. Crucially, the session went deeper than funding options. It focused on building strong financial knowledge within the business itself.

Attendees developed a practical understanding of:

  • Profit and loss statements — what they show and why they matter

  • Cash flow management and forecasting

  • The importance of accurate financial documentation

  • Planning for short-term financial stability

  • Building long-term financial sustainability and growth

For many, this was a turning point. Financial documents shifted from being confusing or overwhelming to becoming valuable tools for control and strategic planning. Participants began to understand that strong financial awareness is not just about securing funding — it is about running a resilient, sustainable business.

This increase in financial confidence was one of the most significant outcomes of the programme.

Marketing and AI

The final session combined marketing fundamentals with practical digital innovation.

Participants refined their brand messaging, clarified their ideal customer profiles, and developed realistic marketing action plans tailored to their businesses.

Alongside this, they explored how accessible AI tools can enhance productivity and creativity. From generating content ideas to streamlining workflows, attendees gained hands-on experience using AI — including learning how to create custom GPTs on ChatGPT.

The message was clear: technology is not something to fear. When used strategically, it becomes a powerful and accessible business asset.

More Than Knowledge: Building Belonging

While the practical learning was significant, something equally important was happening in the room.

Breaking Barriers created an environment where entrepreneurs could speak openly about the realities of running a business — from financial pressure to self-doubt. Participants shared experiences, supported one another, and built genuine relationships that continue beyond the programme.

Feedback captured a powerful shift. Many described feeling lost, isolated, or overwhelmed at the beginning. By the end, they reported feeling:

  • Connected

  • Educated

  • Braver

  • Reassured

  • Motivated

That transformation highlights the real value of Breaking Barriers. It doesn’t just strengthen business knowledge — it builds confidence, momentum, and a sense of belonging.

A Model for Regional and National Impact

#BreakingBarriersBuildingBusiness was intentionally designed to be repeatable and scalable. As the first programme of its kind in Calderdale, it has already demonstrated the demand for inclusive, grassroots business support that reflects real-world entrepreneurial challenges.

There is strong potential for this model to shape business support regionally and nationally — creating a lasting legacy for Halifax and beyond. By combining sponsorship, local collaboration, practical learning, and community-building, Breaking Barriers offers a blueprint for how enterprise support can evolve to meet modern needs.
